In some accounts, the corpse was believed to chew or consume its own burial shroud. In others, it appeared to consume parts of itself.

But the truly frightening part of the legend was what happened outside the grave.

As the Nachzehrer consumed, the living could weaken and die.

Its victims were often imagined as people connected to the deceased, particularly members of the same family or community.

The monster therefore did not necessarily need to climb from its coffin and attack anyone.

It could remain underground.

Silent. Invisible.

Yet somehow, the dead continued feeding upon the living.

A Vampire Without the Bite

This makes the Nachzehrer very different from the vampire most of us recognise today.

There may be no fangs.

No bite on the neck.

No seductive stranger arriving after sunset.

The horror comes instead from the grave itself.

Someone has died, but death has failed to sever their connection with the living.

The corpse continues to consume.

And somewhere above it, life begins to disappear.

This is why creatures such as the Nachzehrer reveal how much broader historical vampire folklore was than the modern definition of a vampire.

Blood was not always essential.

What mattered was the underlying idea: the dead could take life from the living.

Death and the Fear of the Returning Dead

Stories about revenants cannot be separated entirely from the historical world in which they developed.

Before modern medicine could explain infection, epidemics and the processes that occur after death, communities sometimes searched for supernatural explanations when several people died within a short period.

A death followed by another death could appear connected.

And if a grave was opened, the natural processes of decomposition could produce appearances that were deeply disturbing to people who did not understand their biological causes.

The corpse might therefore become a suspect.

Perhaps the first person to die had not truly become harmless.

Perhaps the dead person was somehow responsible for the deaths that followed.

The grave ceased to be simply a place where death ended.

It became the place from which death could spread.

The Horror of Silence

That is what makes the Nachzehrer so fascinating to us.

Many monsters announce themselves.

They chase. They attack. They reveal themselves.

The Nachzehrer doesn't need to.

Its horror lies in absence.

The creature can remain beneath the earth while its influence reaches beyond the grave.

There is something particularly unsettling about an enemy that cannot be seen.

You cannot run from something that never follows you.

You cannot lock the door against something that never approaches it.

The monster is already where it needs to be.

Among the dead.

Feeding in silence.

From Folklore to Artwork

When we began interpreting the Nachzehrer for the Vampires Collection, we didn't want to turn it into another conventional vampire.

No polished aristocrat.

No familiar cape.

No classic vampire pose.

The design needed to remain connected to the creature's defining element: the grave.

That is why our Nachzehrer appears almost fused with the cemetery around it.

The elongated body and skeletal hands suggest something that has remained too long between life and death. Torn fabric falls from the figure almost like decaying roots. Branches and autumn leaves surround it, blurring the boundary between body, earth and vegetation.

Beside it stands the tombstone.

Not simply as scenery, but as part of the creature's identity.

The Nachzehrer belongs to the grave.

The Raven, the Skull and the Autumn Leaves

The other elements of the artwork continue the same visual language.

The skull is the most direct reminder of mortality.

The raven watches from the tombstone — a living creature standing beside something that should no longer possess life.

And throughout the design, vivid orange autumn leaves cut through the muted colours of stone, earth and decay.

We chose that contrast deliberately.

Autumn exists between abundance and death. The leaves are at their most visually intense at precisely the moment they are dying.

For a creature suspended between death and continued existence, that contradiction felt appropriate.

It also gave the Nachzehrer its own visual identity within the Vampires Collection.

Why the Design Looks Like an Old Engraving

Rather than using the same composition as the other creatures in the collection, the Nachzehrer was approached almost as an illustration discovered inside an old volume of supernatural folklore.

The detailed lines, weathered textures and funerary imagery evoke an old engraving while retaining the stronger contrast needed for contemporary graphic clothing.

THE DEAD FEED IN SILENCE

The phrase accompanying the artwork came directly from what makes the legend disturbing.

The Nachzehrer does not need to hunt.

It does not need to emerge from darkness.

It doesn't even need to leave the grave.

While the world of the living continues above it, something beneath the earth is still consuming.

The dead feed in silence.

That became our interpretation of the Nachzehrer.

Not simply an image of a monster, but a visual retelling of an old fear:

that burial may not always mean the dead are gone.

WEAR THE STORY

The Nachzehrer design is part of the Vampires Collection — a series inspired by vampire traditions, restless dead and supernatural creatures found in folklore around the world.

Discover the story. Wear the legend.

Explore the Nachzehrer design →

Discover the dark folklore of the Nachzehrer, a Germanic revenant believed to feed from the grave, and the story behind the design
Fast fashion has made it easy to buy cheap clothing in bulk — but it’s also created a culture of disposable fashion.
